The Film Festival started in 2008, it was a project to bring back movies. The first festival was called the Movies Return. More than 25,000 people came, more than 60 movies were shown at the Plaza Theater. The Festival came back in 2009, this time with a new name, The Plaza Classic Film Festival. The Festival keeps on growing.
The Plaza Classic Film Festival drew celebrities. Al Pacino, Debbie Reynolds, Rita Moreno, Eva Marie Saint, Tippi Hedren, Michael York, and Margaret O’Brien. More than 200,000 people have attended the first six Plaza Classic Film Festivals.
The Plaza Classic Film Festival has grown has grown with free movie and concerts in the Arts Festival Plaza. The festival is a showcase for local and area film makers. The festival makes $1,500,000 annually. Fifteen percent of its audience comes from outside the 45 mile radius of El Paso, Juarez and Las Cruces.
This is the Festival’s seventh year. Director Charles Horak stepped down and El Paso Times Entertainment writer Doug Pullen was hired as the new program director in 2013.
