In 1973 the Dipp family saved the Plaza Theatre from being demolished. In 1986 the decision was made to demolish the Plaza Theatre, for a new parking lot. The El Paso Community Foundation had to raise $1 million dollars to save the Plaza Theatre from being demolished. The El Paso Community Foundation only had six weeks to raise the $1 million dollars needed.
Sometimes the Plaza Theatre would get checks in envelopes, or money in them. There would be five dollars or a check for $10 in the envelopes. The day before the deadline, fundraising events were held throughout El Paso. Actress Rita Moreno was helping raise the funds. That evening before the deadline, it was announced that all of the funds were raised.
The Plaza Theatre was donated to the city of El Paso in 1990, after a new roof had been placed on the theatre by The El Paso Community Foundation. The Plaza Theater was restored in 2006, it cost $38 million, both the city of El Paso and the Community Foundation helped. El Paso hired the best theater surgeons in the country.
